David beats Goliath on Goliath’s home court

Last night, Midway traveled across the bridge to battle the Yellow Jackets of Kingston…errr, Roane County High.

The Lady Waves were coming off a thrilling 53-50 win over Greenback.   But they would face a tough challenge on the north side of town.  The Lady Jackets entered the game 3-3 and needing a win to move above .500.  The Lady Waves (2-4, 1-1) battled hard and gave the Lady Jackets a scare but, Kingston would get the 65-52 victory.

The Midway boys entered the game on a 5 game win streak, including a thumping of the Greenback Cherokees.  The Jackets were on a 4 game win streak.  One streak would end but whose would it be?  Could the Waves actually win in that gym?  After all, the Waves haven’t won in that building since the 1983 season.  Until last night.  The Waves made history as they beat the Jacket’s 49-44.

Following the final buzzer, the players and students celebrated with a breakdown of SOR on the yellow jacket painted court.  “Swattin’ Bees and Drinkin’ Sweet Tea” echoed throughout the wooded hollers south of the river last night.  The Midway boys are now 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the district.  Since losing the season opener against Monterey, the Waves have won 6 straight.

Midway will now travel to Oakdale on Friday and Harriman on Tuesday before returning home on the 21st to play Coalfield.
