Leap Poopy Leap

During the early to mid 1990’s, the basketball cheerleaders had a very unique cheer…”Leap Poopy Leap”.

Wendye Bosnick was the Lady Waves’ post player and at 6’4” tall, was obviously was the player who jumped for the tip to start the game. I’m not sure why, and I probably don’t want to know, but her nickname in school was “Poopy”.

So at the start of each game, as the players would get into position for the tip-off, the Midway cheerleaders would cheer “Leap Poopy Leap”.

Mike Hayes started teaching at Midway High School in 1974.

He took over as head coach of the Lady Waves basketball team from Boyd Woody in 1981.

Jumpin Jacks

The starting 5 of the 1952 Midway High School boys basketball team was Buford Sitzlar at center, Don Johnson and Joe Woody at Forward, and Starlen Moore and Boyd Woody at guards. The team was not particularly tall but they were great leapers, especially Buford Sitzlar and Don Johnson, which led to then head coach Lee Eble to give the team a nickname...the "Jumpin' Jacks".

Midway football has only had 6 Head Coaches to date.

The list of coaches: Labe Gregory, Nate Campbell, Don Eberhart, Glenn Wheaton, Stan Branson, and Craig Moser.

1984 Playoffs

Did you know 1984 was the first year that Midway made it into the football playoffs.

Midway had a lot of great teams prior to 1984 that had 8-2 seasons however, back then, only the first place team in the region made it into the playoffs and Midway was in a region with teams such as Alcoa, Sweetwater, Kingston, etc.

Prior to 1980, women's basketball was played 6 on 6 rather than 5 on 5.

In his 2 years kicking for Midway football, Tanner "Golden Toe" Roberson kicked 7, yes 7, onside kicks that were recovered by Midway.

The MHS seniors of the 2003 squad played in 7 playoff games. They also won 2 region championships. ... [ read more ]
