Week 10 Pick

Week 10 is here and it’s been a long season for the Green Nation.

This week, the Waves travel to Tellico Plains. Tellico Plains, Bledsoe County, Hancock County, Grundy County, etc………….why are we playing all these teams??? You can thank the new TSSAA classification this year whose major goal was to help reduce travel costs of teams. Fail.

The Tellico Plains Bears (6-3) are a tough team to predict. They defeated Rockwood in week 5, yet they lost to Harriman in week 7………

The Waves (2-7) are coming off a win against Hancock County.

Can the Waves end 2009 on a high note with a big upset? The Pick Panel chimes in………

Amber Johnson:
Just from looking at records, wins, and losses to the same opponents; this should be a good match-up for the regular season ender. Yeah, it's been a tough year for this young Midway team, but there has been some improvements too.

I'm going with Midway in a close one.

Barry Narramore:
In late 1983, the Midway football team was ranked #1 in the state in single A football. The Greenwaves traveled to Tellico Plains to take on a very tough Bears team. This game was a very physical game and entering the 4th quarter the Green was trailing 6-0. Late in the quarter the Greenwaves mounted a long drive to the Bears 13 yard line. On 2nd and short Midway running back Randy Pack hit the line hard and was swarmed under by a big Bears defensive front. Randy, who was always very aggressive about getting back to the huddle, jumped and bumped into a couple of Tellico players. An unnecessary flag was dropped and unsportsmanlike conduct was called on the Midway running back. That penalty stalled the drive and the final score would be Tellico 6 Midway 0. At the time only one team may it to the playoffs. So that one penalty would most likely cost the 84 Greenwaves a chance at their very first playoff and their #1 state ranking. I played center/linebacker on that team and needless to say there is no love lost here between Midway and Tellico.

Hard to say if the Greenwave team has improved over the last several weeks. The Green relies heavily on the passing game and the shotgun snap. Weather conditions, the last few weeks, have not been very favorable to this type offense. The Greenwaves have showed improvement in the running game. Henderson, Oliver, and Viar combined for over a 100 yards rushing last week which would have been unheard of at the first of the season. Do not look for the running game to get that kind of yardage against a big Tellico team but Viar is due a big game and I think the Green can stop this bears offense like Harriman did. Give me the Green in a close game.

Ralton Emory:
I pick the Panda Bears from Monroe.

Kyle Canup:
I was glad to see midway win last Friday and especially on senior night. It’s good they won their last home game. Tellico Plains has some pretty noticeable wins especially over Rockwood but lost to Harriman barely as did we. I don’t have the best record win picking this year anyways so I’m not losing anything by picking Midway in the UPSET!!

Randy Rose:
It would be great to finish up with a win, hope the Green can pull it off, but I'm going to take the Bears at home.

Michael Rose:
Midway used to play Tellico Plains regularly up until the early to mid 1990's. It was the scene of the famous Greg Herron Chicago Bears incident (read story here). Also I was on the receiving end of what had to be the dirtiest hit in the history of Midway football. I got speared in the back while receiving a play from the sideline from Coach Stan Branson. We were beating them like a drum and the kid got ejected. Tellico Plains is a dirty, dirty team.

Tellico Plains by two touchdowns.

Week 9 Picks

This Friday the Waves will be at home to face another team for the 1st time – Hancock County Indians.

To say that the Indians have a “young” team would be an understatement. Hancock County, located near the TN/VA line, only added high school football in 2006.

Both the Indians and the Waves will be looking for win #2 on Friday night. Hancock’s lone win came against Oakdale 12-7; Midway defeated Wartburg to start the season.

Who will go to 2-7 this Friday night…let’s hear from the SORSN Pick Panel.

Ralton Emory:
Go with the Green Waves.

Kyle Canup:
I know my pick was terribly wrong last week by picking the Waves but I think we have a better chance this week. We'll defiantly have the better coaching staff this Friday and hopefully the better team. I’m looking to see some big plays from Thomas to Wakon Friday night. I think the Waves have a big game Friday night and get win #2.

Michael Rose:
Give me some Mo Green.

Randy Rose:
I think the Green steps up this week and gets a win at home. Give me Midway.

Barry Narramore:
Lord this has been a long year. The Rockwood game was interesting for the 1st half. The Tigers had a lot more speed than the Waves and we wore down in the second half of the game. This week is a new opponent and a chance for the Waves to get another win. I have not been around the team this week. Not sure of any injuries from last weeks game. Midway has been in every game they have played except the Grace game. They will break into the win column this week. Go Big Green!!!

Amber Johnson:
Gotta go with Midway on this one.

Pick Panel - Week 8

The Greenwaves are hopefully dried out from last week’s game against Grundy County because this week they travel to Rockwood for a district game against the Tigers.

Rockwood is 5-2 (1-2) with lopsided wins over Greenback, Sweetwater, and Coalfield as well as a big win over Kingston. Their losses have come via Grace Christian and Tellico Plains.

The Waves have played better week over week and have been on the door step of win #2 for the last couple of weeks.

Can the Waves beat the odds this week? Let’s see what the Magic 8 Ball has to say….

Amber Johnson:
As bad as I hate to do it; I’m picking Rotwood. Every year I pick Midway over Rockwood, and we haven't beaten them yet. Maybe by reverse psychology, the boys can pull it out.

Barry Narramore:
With 2 minutes left in the 1st quarter last Friday night I thought I was witnessing the death of the 2009-2010 Midway Football team. For the next 3 quarters we may have seen the resurrection of that same team. We finally saw some bone jarring hits, something that has been missing from this year’s team. I saw Matt Oliver run like a man who wanted to score every time he touched the ball. I seen Tyler McMahan playing his heart out and I saw a Midway team trying to win. I can live with that and I refuse to pick against them. This is the best last placed team in East Tn. If this team can figure out how to play a full game, there's more wins left in their future.

Randy Zipper Rose:
Nothing would be sweeter than to see a big win over Rockwood, but I'll have to go with the Tigers at home.

Kyle Canup:
Well I was definitely shocked with how well they played against Grundy County and saw really big plays on both sides of the ball. A few costly penalties though and I think that was a major key to the loss. Rockwood on the other hand isn’t Grundy County, they’re a lot better. If the Waves come out hard they could put a good fight against them and maybe even pull away with a huge upset. It’s against everything I know to pick Rockwood so I’m pulling for a BIG week 8 upset.

Ralton Mule Emory:
Rockwood.

Michael Rose:
Viva Rock Vegas.

There’s been some separation among the panel due to last weeks pick. The Rose brothers have moved out in front with records of 5-2. Ralton & Amber are each at 4-3. Kyle is at 3-4 and Barry…well, let’s just say he loves his Waves.

The Pick Panel can be found using the menu along the right side….look under the SORSN Football section.

Week 7 Panel Picks: Midway vs Grundy County

For the 2nd time in 3 weeks, the Waves will face off against another purple-clad team as they play host to the Grundy County Yellow Jackets….yes, purple & yellow jackets. This is a first ever meeting between the two schools. Grundy County is a 2A school located off of I-24, about an hour south of Murfreesboro.

Grundy is 2-4 on the season with wins over Oliver Springs and Chattanooga Christian.

The Waves fell to arch nemesis, Greenback, last week 21-14. The Waves were down early but rallied in the 2nd half and nearly took the win away from the ‘kees.

Will it rain purple in the Emerald Forest Friday night or will the Greenwaves return to being the Mean-Green Waves and send the 1st time visitors to SOR on the long bus ride back home with a big L?

Guys & gal…make your pick.

Amber Johnson:
Midway has been knocking on the door of Victory for the past two weeks. They've shown fight and progress every week. This is the week they "kick the door in." Give me Midway in a victorious introduction to Grundy Co.

Randy Rose:
I hope the Green can put it together and get a big win this week, but I'm going with Grundy Co.

Ralton Emory:
I have to go with the Green this week. I feel that there is a burning desire to get this losing monkey off their chest and this will be the week to do it.

Some might call this an upset pick, I call it the Green playing to their potential.

The pieces will fall into place this week for Coach Mo's boys: 28 to 14 over the Orange Hornets (er...Yellow Jackets) of Grundy.

Kyle Canup:
Well I’ve taken Midway 5 out of 6 and only once have I got that right. I picked Midway to go to OZ and beat the Bobcats but we came up short, and well Grundy beat OS pretty good. Too many close games this year and not enough wins so I’m taking Grundy County this week. Maybe it'll come back and bite me for not staying true.

Boo:
Didn't get to watch the Green play last week but heard we gave up points on long plays. G.C. will be a tough chore for the young Greenwaves but I think they'll get this one in a close game that goes all the way to the 4th quarter. If the Defense shuts down the big plays and the offense can score more than 14 points, we get the win. "Go big Green."

Michael Rose:
Grundy County Auctioneers by 12.

Week 6: Midway @ Greenback Pick Panel

Ralton Emory:
I can't stand the team from Blount, err, Monroe, uhh, Loudon County (they recruit players from the others - just kidding guys). Anyway, I don't see our fortune changing this week. I'm hoping for a Iowa/Penn State type of upset.
Give me GB, unfortunately.

Barry Narramore:
Tough game at O.S. last week. Waves need to put that one behind them and more on to this week with long time rival Greenback staring them in the face. This one should be a great game to watch. Midway 14 Greenback 13. Go Waves!!!

Randy Rose:
This looks like an even match up for two long-time rivals. I think the Green will step up, play hard and beat Greenback. Give me Midway in a close one.

Kyle Canup:
Well I thought the waves could have had one last week but they ended up not pulling it out, Greenback isn't the best team this year but neither are we. Hopefully they get some fuel to their fire and surprise us and beat Greenback. So I'm staying true to the Green this week and taking Midway

Amber Johnson:
I'm on the fence about this pick. I can't stand Greenback. There was a fight every time we played them in basketball. I almost fouled out in the first quarter my senior year. The refs gave us warnings. There is definitely no love lost between us. There are still stories told about this rivalry.
Ask some of the older Midway football players about black roses. I don't care how tired you'll get. I don't care if we have a young team. Who cares if you get hurt. This is the game you play your best. Your fighting for pride on this one. Get fired up Green cause I'm counting on you. Midway in a slug fest.

Michael Rose:
Hmm, can Midway get a win? Reports are that the Waves really gave an all out effort last week at OS, but came up a little bit short. This week at Greenback? I sure hope for a win, but just do not see it in the cards. Greenback by 6

Week 5 Pick Panel

Friday night was ugly…..GCA rolled into the Emerald Forest in their pleated khakis, and rolled through the Midway secondary on their way to a 35-0 win.

The Waves started the came strong and the game remained tight for 1 ½ quarters; but the galloping Rams of Grace began to connect on big play after big play.

This week, the Waves will be on the road to Oliver Springs. The OS football program has been MIA for the last 5+ years but it has rebounded this year. The OS Bobcats are 3-1 with lopsided wins over Hancock Co, Oakdale and Coalfield. The Bobcat offense is averaging 38 points per game. Their one loss (21-40) came at the hands of Grundy County.

Midway and OS last met in 2004 with the Waves winning 12-10. However, these 2 teams often scrimmage each other in the summer so they are familiar with each other. In addition, OS head coach Wiley Bracket was once an assistant coach under Craig Moser.

Can the Waves recover from being tilt-a-whirled by Grace? Of course they can.
Can the Waves visit the land of Oz and come home with a victory? They can if they play smart, play with heart and play brave.
Can the young Jedi coach turn the tide and get a win over his Yoda? Let’s hope not do we.
Will the Purple People Eater clad Bobcats pay a visit to Reno’s before the game for a jersey make-over? For the sake of everyone’s eyes, let’s hope so.

Lad’s and Lady….make your predictions…

“Hate to pour salt in the wounds, but going with OS this time.”
- Amber Johnson

“Hope the Green team can bounce back and get a win this week. OS is a long time county rival and there have been many tough, close games between these two teams over the years. I think this will be a close game, but home field might be the difference. I'm going with OS.”
- Randy Rose

“The last time these two teams played, we saw the birth of "Swivel-Hips" Myers. This time...hum...who will be crowned with the latest nickname?

This could be a bounce back game. I've discussed this personally with several players and they feel they can pull this one out on the road. To quote, ‘I sick of getting beat.’

Bragging rights between OS and MHS are at stake. Play tough, hope for a win.

As much as it pains me, however, I'm not sure this is that week. I will pick OS and hope I'm wrong.”
- Ralton Emory

“I know last week I picked against the waves and I hoped that maybe with people picking against them they would play a lot harder, but it didn’t seem to work. There were a few things I noticed in the Grace game that weren’t too bad if we woulda kept it up. I was surprised when we came out with an interception and then a decent drive before a fumble turned it back over to them. This game should be interesting considering Joe Campbell was an assistant there last year. So I know he wants to beat them quite a bit. I think if they come out good and keep it up they can take this game. So with that said I’m taking the Waves this week….feels good to say that again”
- Kyle Canup

“Last week was a tough one for the Greenwaves. The young Waves could not maintain any momentum because of fumbles and penalties. Andre the Giant was a man among boys from his end position for Grace.

The Green will have to put this one behind them and focus on the task at hand. That task will be a much improved Oliver Springs Bobcat team. O.S. put a thumping on Coalfield last week and would love a repeat performance this week against the Waves. Midways defense must improve and the offense has to hold onto the ball. Football is a game played with the heart. Midway football has and will continue to be played with the heart of lions. Go big Green!!!! Midway 14 O.S. 7”
- Barry Narramore

“Unfortunately, like Randy Rose’s hairline, the Waves depth and roster seems to be thinning before our very eyes. Since when did funnel cakes, balloon busting dart games and riding the Himalaya (do they still play Sweet Child of Mine on that thing?) become more important than a midweek practice against a conference rival? Also going to class and making decent grades are something you have to do and are not an option in order to represent the Waves on Friday nights….c’mon fellows pick it up a bit, your teammates and the legions of Midway fans are counting on you.

I just don't see Midway getting well this week against the Purple Slipper Wearers of Oz. The running game at times looked better last week and young Tommy Viar shows great potential, but as Coach Galyon might have said, 'we just don’t have enough horses in the barn right now, so forth and whatnot' (or something along those lines).

Oliver Springs by 12."
- Mike Rose

Pick Panel chimes in on week 4

This Friday, the Waves welcome Grace Christian to the Emerald Forest. Two years ago, the Waves put up nearly 50 points against Grace on their way to a private school beat down. Flash forward to today, Grace is a much improved program and will be looking to flip the score from 2007.

Grace is 3-0 with a big win over Gibbs, and beat downs of Tellico Plains and their brotha from another mutha - Grace Baptist. They are talented and capable of scoring a lot of points.

The Greenwave team appeared to be on hiatus last week against Bledose County…both mentally and physically. Can the ‘hawgs’ get mean and dirty upfront? Will the passing game return this week? Will a running game surface? All of these can happen…..but will they in week 4? Let’s see what the Pick Panel has to say about this week’s matchup:

“To slow the game down, I suggest we dig a sink hole (aka Fulton)...

But alas, this is a learning time for the Waves. Just continue to try to improve and some things might fall your way. But as much as it pains me, Grace wins this one.”
- Ralton Emory

“Last weeks game didn't end like us Greenwave fans wanted it to. The Bledsoe Co running back found gapping holes in the green defense early in the game. Viar and Co. never really found their selves and fell behind early and couldn't catch up. A couple of errant throws and several dropped passes where some of the drive killers. The lack of a running game is still a major problem. The last two games the Midway defense has collapsed early then picked up the pace later in the game.

The Waves must recover quickly for this week will be a bigger test with Grace visiting Midway on Friday night. The Waves will have to shore up the defense early and the offense can't survive on 14 points a game. Dillion Davidson did provide a spark for the Waves on offense last Friday.

Viar has the makings of one of the best passing QB's in Midway history but he is still young and the Green receivers have to make the catches on anything even close; especially those right in their hands.

I guess some of my fellow pickers will have to go away from the Waves this week. Grace is a strong team and will be a handful for the Green machine of Midway. But picking against the Waves for me is kind of like eating diet food, I don't like it, don't want it and probably ain’t gonna eat it!!!

Give me the Waves in the upset of the week. “
- Barry Narramore

“A tough match up this week against Grace. Expect to see the Green team battle hard, but I think Grace comes out on top.”
-Randy Rose

“I don’t even know were to start with this one. Of ALL the schools on the schedule this year Grace takes the cake of most hated. I never thought I would see the day were I pick Grace to win against Midway but it looks like that’s how it’s gonna be. So please prove me wrong Waves and pull an upset”
- Kyle Canup

“Waves win with young..errr wait I have tried that a couple weeks in a row, lets go a different direction this week.

The young Wave team is reportedly struggling, struggling with young skill position players, struggling with moving the opponent off the line of scrimmages, struggling with making the plays to win football games. Reports have the Waves leaving the field with heads down and shoulders slumped Friday night after Bledsoe rolled through the Emerald Forest. Let me tell the Green team this, now is not the time to quit, lay down or roll over. Coach CF Moser never did it, Coach Stan Branson never allowed it and there is a long history of Midway teams putting it all on the line every week, no matter the outcome. This commitment to team effort stretches all the way back to the playing days of Boo Narramore and leather helmets.

Sometimes in a football season, you just have to pull the shoulder pads a bit tighter, put an extra pump of air in the helmet (do they still do that?) and fight through some tough weeks. Right now is one of those times. Will the Waves get well with a win against Grace this week? That’s a tough order, Grace is an experienced veteran team, leading the district and playing pretty good football right now. What is not too much to ask is an all out effort from the Green Team and to leave it all on the field every week. Give me Grace to win, but a better effort from the men in Green..”
- Michael Rose

Week 3 Picks from the SORSN Panel

This week Midway host Bledsoe County on Patriot Day. This is the first time these schools have met. The Warriors are 1-1 with a 20-14 win over Coalfield and a 6-21 loss to a very good Marion Barber County team.

The Waves are 1-1 and for the most part, have played well in both games. The Waves are coming off a 21-14 loss to Harriman. The Waves had little success running the ball but the passing game did have several big plays; especially in the 2nd half. Looking at the talent and size along the Blue Devil sidelines, you would have expected the Devils to win by at least 40. The Waves do deserve credit for playing up to their opponent. The men in the trenches showed heart & strength.

Can Midway’s running game improve enough to be effective against the Warrior defense? Can Bledsoe Co. stop the aerial attack from the Waves? This one is gonna be tough…..

Panel members…make your picks!

“Now we find out the measure of the 2009 Wave team; how we respond to a loss will say much about the intestinal fortitude of the players. I know the coaches will do the job to prepare the team.

Bledsoe County Warriors will be meeting the Mighty Green Waves for the first time. The Warriors are also coming off a loss to Marion County so both teams are looking to get back on track.

This is also the Warriors third road game in a row to start the season. Will the road legs get tired? I hope so.

This one could go either way, but I think the travel will hurt the Warriors even though it will be a good battle. Waves in another nail-biter.”
- Ralton Emory ‘91

“Waves win late with Young Tom Viar making a couple big plays in the fourth quarter.”
- Michael Rose ‘91

“Midway lost a tough one last Friday Night. If not for the 1st two series this game might have turned in the Waves favor. Viar continues to impress but the running game must improve. Defense was not bad after those first 2 Harriman drives.

Bledsoe Co. will have to be a much improved team from last years squad to beat this years Green team. According to MaxPreps web site, Bledsoe Co. finished last season with a record of 1-9, being outscored on average 33 to 11. The message boards do note that this years team has improved and Bledsoe did manage a close game 20-6 with usually powerful Marion Co in their first game of the season. Marion Co shot themselves in the foot several times with fumbles and penalties. A close win in week two against a weak Coalfield team is not much to get excited about for the Bledsoe fans.

I predict that Bledsoe will not be able to get much pressure on QB Viar and this week Thomas will put up 300 plus with Wakon making two TD catches. Also Moser will get the running game going and this may be a repeat of the Wartburg game except Midway will get at least three TDs. Midway 21 Bledsoe 6.

Youth League starts at 3 pm at Loudon High School on Saturday.”
- Barry Narramore ‘84

“Well I only got to see half of the Midway/Harriman game and at times they looked good and at times they didn’t. If Midway can do a good job on defense and stay consistent on offense they should be able to put together a win. I don’t know much about Bledsoe County but from what I have read they’re “so-so.” I’m taking Midway in this one.”
- Kyle Canup ‘09

“I caught some grief for picking Harriman last week. I had a phone call from a disappointed Coach O'Toole. I was on the fence, literally for the Harriman game. I saw some things that needed improvement. Our defense had some hit and misses. One thing i liked was the 4th quarter effort out of the boys in green. If we would have seen play like that for 4 quarters it would have been a different outcome. The short, quick passes were effective. We need to eat up the field 10 yards at a time.

However, that game's over, and it's on to this week. We don't have too much background on the Bledsoe Co. bunch, but one thing I do know, is the boys in green have some fight in them when they're down...so I’m taking the Waves this week. We're gonna tighten down and bounce back.”
- Amber Johnson ‘99

"Can the Green bounce back from a tough loss last week? The answer is yes they can, but will they? I think so, give me Midway."
- Randy Rose '79

Pick Panel - Week 2 Picks

The Blue Devils are coming off a 14-7 loss to Kingston. The Blue Devils lost to the Jackets last year by just 1 TD. The high school sports call-in show on the Comcast Community Channel has Blue Devil fans calling in asking for a coaching change in Harriman. They are quoted as saying "Coach Tapp can't win the big game!". One caller even said that "75% of the fans want Tapp gone." Obviously, these 'fans' have lost their minds asking for a coaching change…however, this could play into Midway's favor. Is this negativity affecting the team? Is Tony Lambert headed to Harriman next year?

The Waves traveled to Wartburg last week and came off the hill with a 14-0 victory. The Waves displayed a truly balanced offense unlike anything seen in recent years. But also present were several kinks in the SOR armor. Hopefully, for Green Nation fans, we will continue to see improvements from last week and the Waves can start the season 2-0.

Boys & girl….make your picks.

“First of all, did Wakon have twin babies? It sure looked like it last Friday night. Every time I saw him, he seemed to have a kid hanging under each armpit. Maybe those Bulldog players were just lazy and thought they'd catch a ride on Wakon's back down the field.

The Wartburg game was not a convincing victory, but it was a good start. Probably the poise of our young team was the most impressive thing. Viar and his offense converted on fourth down a couple of times in the first half. They also showed their grit in an exciting "2 minute drill," marching down the field to score at the end of the half. T-Mac, Colt Johnson, and Murphy showed they were ready to play with some bone-jarring hits. T-Mac seemed to be everywhere, making numerous tackles or at least breaking up the play. The injury questions about Oliver seemed to be answered, as he was impressive on both sides of the ball. Henderson showed his versatility, running hard out of the backfield and making several key catches. That took some of the heat off Wakon, who was double and triple covered all night. Good start for this young season.

This coming Friday may be the game of the year for the Greenwaves. You can bet that the Harriman Blue Devils are not overlooking the Green after a hard-fought loss at Kingston on Friday. The Blue Devils know the importance of this game, and either team would have a leg up on the playoff march with a victory in this game. The only gauging factor I have on this one is to have seen the Green play a fairly even scrimmage against Kingston in the spring, and to know what Harriman did against Kingston last Friday night. If this proves right, this game may very well turn into one of the great games we have seen played by these two teams over the last several years. With that said, I'll pick the Midway coaches to be the difference in this, and I'll take Midway by 1 in a snot-slinger. I'd also like to pledge $10 to Ethan Hall for the purpose of getting a haircut. I missed three quarters of the Wartburg game trying to see over that rooster-top mohawk.”
- Barry “Boo” Narramore

"Hope I'm wrong but I'm taking Harriman in a close one."
- Randy "Zipper" Rose

“I have to give my props to the Alcoa Tornados for taking it to the Maryville Rebels this past week. Winning without using the pass…awesome. However, the SOR boys did something as impressive by putting up the big, fat goose-egg against Wartburg in week 1.

Now we turn our attention to the Indigo Demons of Harriman. This has been a pivotal game for both teams over the last couple of years in the “old” region structure and will be no less important this year. The Big Green Machine needs to play the best ball so far to pull out a win this year.

Big Green Maniacs need to be out in force in the Emerald Forest this Friday night.

Waves win in a close one.”
- Ralton “Mule” Emory

“Well I was surprised from what I did see from the Waves Friday night but there is a lot that could be improved on. Viar and Wakon did have some big plays but there could’ve been a lot more. Hopefully this week Hicks will be lined up at the other WR spot and help take some of the heat off of Wakon. Oliver looked good running the ball; wasn’t big runs but got the first down when needed. Defense looked good but let those big plays go; hopefully they contain the Devils a little better. Well I think it’ll be a close game but I’m taking the Waves on this one... Don’t let me down. One last thing....what colors will Mr.Mason be reppin on Friday night? Blue or Green?"
- Kyle “Cannonball” Canup

“I expect Midway to play hard in front of the home crowd, but the Harriman Blue Devil bunch is gonna be too much for this young squad to handle. I see the Blue Devils pulling away late in the game. I hate to do it....Harriman gonna take this one.”
- Amber “Bock” Johnson

“This one is almost too close to call. Harriman showed well last week at Kingston with QB Chesser throwing it around pretty well. Inman is a pretty good back who could give Midway some troubles up front. Harriman’s defense is reportedly pretty good too or (maybe Vic Kings Yellow Jackets are bad offensively..hey on a side thought lets chase that rabbit a minute... will we ever see a Midway versus Kingston matchup, especially in the Emerald Forest?) Midway gutted out a tough win at Wartburg with a couple plays in the 1st half…..

I give Midway the close nod at home as young Tom Viar makes a play late. Midway in a close one...”
- Michael “Rosey” Rose

2009 Pick Panel - Week 1 Predictions

Wartburg started their season last week with a 12-20 loss to Monterey. An interception with less than 3 minutes to play sealed the win for Monterey.

Last year, the Waves & Bull Dogs faced off on Halloween with the Waves getting all the treats, winning 33-7. However, Wartburg brings a deep ball team this year. The Bull Dogs field an experienced group of guys with 9 seniors and 12 juniors.

Can the Waves open the season with a win on the road or will the Bull Dogs be best in show Friday night?

Lady & gents...make your picks!

“Before I get to my pick this week, I want to say that our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Jake Logue from Sullivan South. As well, to the players and families of West High School.

As far as the pick, first game jitters will play a factor early. Wartburg sees this game as a winnable one for the Dawg Pound. With their experience and with one game under their belts, they will start stronger. Also, the Dawgs in blue have been on the short end of the stick for several years and want to claw back into contention.

That being said, I believe Coach Mo and the other coaches have this Waves team ready to go. Weather the early storm, don't make mistakes, and come off the mountain with a victory. Waves by 7.”
- Ralton Emory

“This appears to be the year Thomas Viar takes the reins for the Midway Greenwaves but Viar is still young and a ton of weight has been placed on this 10th grader’s shoulders.

Viar has worked hard this off-season and appears much more poised in the pocket and quicker in avoiding the rush.

The Midway boys have not been pushed around much in pre-season scrimmages with all the play dates ending in close scores. The Green has lost some speed with the departures of Ray Ray and other seniors.

Wartburg's QB Rusty Phillips is family on the wife’s side but I don't think Rusty will be able to turn the Green Tide. This may be the year that Barry has to pick against the Waves but it won't be this first week. Midway in a close one. Go big Green!!!!!”
- Barry Narramore

“You know I don’t care what kinda threat the "bulldogs" bring any time. I can’t stand to even think about them winning. I just can’t stand em', it’s pretty simple so I am definitely pickin the Greenwaves on this one.”
- Kyle Canup

“Excitement is in the air, it’s football time South of the River and all across the state. Can the Green get out of the chute with a win? I think so. Give me Midway.”
- Randy Rose

“Waves start slow but out power in the end….Waves win.”
- Amber Johnson

“Midway by two touchdowns.”
- Michael Rose

Seriously? That’s all we’re getting from Michael “Corso” Rose? It appears Mike is still suffering from writers-cramp after his Bristol article.
