Greenback, TN — The Midway Greenwaves put on a statement performance Friday night at Satterfield Stadium, rolling past the Greenback Cherokees 36-7 behind explosive plays, a stingy defense, and strong contributions from all three phases of the game.
The first quarter set the tone for the night. After struggling on their opening drive, the Greenwaves’ defense made an early stand, stuffing the Cherokees on fourth down. Momentum quickly shifted when Midway dialed up some trickery: running back Dawson Buckner connected with Rowynn McClure on a halfback pass to spark the offense. Shortly after, Tate Mason found the end zone for the game’s opening touchdown. The Greenwaves struck again before the quarter ended, with quarterback Lincoln Reed firing a touchdown pass to Justice Lane, giving Midway a 14-0 lead.
In the second quarter, Midway’s defense continued to shine. Zane Moore came up with a huge interception to stop Greenback’s first drive. While the Cherokees answered with a key fourth-down stop of their own, the Greenwaves’ defense held strong, forcing another punt. On their next possession, Midway’s offense needed just three plays to score, highlighted by a long Reed run that set up Mason’s 30-yard touchdown scamper. At halftime, the Greenwaves were in full control, leading 20-0.
The third quarter proved to be the dagger. After trading punts to open the half, Midway’s offense once again struck quickly, with Mason powering in for another rushing touchdown. The Greenwave defense forced yet another Greenback punt, but a miscue from the Cherokees’ long snapper turned disastrous when the ball sailed over the punter’s head. Toby Nichols scooped it up and took it to the house for a defensive score. Special teams kept the fireworks going, as Midway tacked on a safety after sacking the Greenback punter in the end zone. By the end of the third, Midway had blown the game wide open, leading 36-0.
Greenback managed to avoid the shutout in the fourth quarter, scoring against Midway’s second unit, but the night belonged to the Greenwaves. From trick plays to defensive dominance, Midway controlled every aspect of the game in a commanding 36-7 victory.
