Midway Splits Games With Sweetwater

The green faithful traveled to Sweetwater, the land of the lazy beagle, for some Monday night basketball.  The Lady Waves (1-2) battled the Lady Wildcats for 4 quarters but came up short, falling 39-48.  In the boys game, the Wildcats hung around for the first half but the Waves (2-1) blew it open in the second half to cruise to a 80-39 victory.

Girls Game

Senior, Kyleigh Cawood, got the scoring started for the Lady Waves with a pair of 3s in the opening quarter.  Juniors Kyker Johnston and Millie Bacon each added baskets for the Lady Waves but it wasn’t enough to offset Sweetwater’s hot start. The Lady Cats put up 23 first quarter points. They would maintain their double-digit lead at the half thanks in part to the free-throw line. Foul discrepancy was a huge part of the game.  9 fouls called on the Lady Cats compared to 21 on the Lady Waves.  The Lady Waves would make only 3 trips to the line the entire game.

In the end, the Lady Waves were not able to overcome the first quarter deficit and Sweetwater would win on their home court, 48-39.

Cawood led the scoring for Midway with 22 points. Tatum Collier added 8 before fouling out and Bacon had 5.

Boys Game

A lot of questions surround the Midway Greenwaves this season.  Is this a rebuild after losing so many seniors?  Will they have enough depth on the bench to maintain their fast pace of play?  Will they wear the black warmups for every game?

Two of the three questions were answered Monday night.  No, this is not a rebuild.  The team does not have a single senior on the team however they have a talented Junior and Sophomore class and some great freshman athletes who can add some minutes when needed.

Cooper Queener would get the Waves rolling early.  The heir to SORSN knocked down 3 triples and a couple jump shots to lead the charge with 13 first quarter points.  Junior Cole Bentley also knocked down a trey in the opening quarter to help the Waves to an early lead.  Queener continued the hot shooting in the second quarter, knocking down a couple more 3s.  Sweetwater did manage to hang around in the first half, however, that all changed following the break. Six different players scored for Midway in the third quarter alone with Cadyn Collins, Issac Best, Brady Arndts and Bentley all knocking down shots from behind the arc – leading to a commanding 31-point lead at the end of the third for the Waves.  B. Arndts would add 3 more treys early in the fourth before handing the keys over to the underclassmen. The Waves left the round house with a 80-39 win and a trip to Long John Silvers.

Queener led the scoring with 26 points followed by Brady Arndts with 19.  Best had 10 and Bentley 9.
