Midway Holds On for Win Number 6

The Greenwave take sole possession of first place in the district with a hard fought 33-28 win over Oneida.

The Oneida Indians running game jumped all over the Waves in the early going however two big offensive plays for Spencer “Swivel Hips” Myers kept the game close. The first was a screen pass to Myers which he was able to break some tackles, set up some key blocks, and scamper 40 yards to the endzone. The second was a half-back pass from Blake Bray to Myers for another big touchdown. Bray was held under 100 yards rushing for the first time in 5 games but managed to punch one in for six early in the game. The Waves went into the half with a 21-14 lead.

However, things began to get intense in the 2nd half. Midway’s Special Teams play was bad, real bad in the 2nd half and it helped keep the game close between the two teams. But Oneida made costly mistakes themselves. Midway’s defense began to key in on Oneida’s running game, forcing them to throw the ball and Jeremy Woody came away with 2 key interceptions on the night. Bryan Noland and Zach Moore had solid games on defense. Noland recorded a sack and we all got to see the “Samoan Stomp” – Bryan’s post-sack jig.

Whenever the Waves got inside the redzone, Jude O’Toole was like a shark with blood in the water. Nothing was keeping this boy off the dance floor! With Oneida’s defense keying in on Midway’s running duo of Blake “The Mule” Bray and Daniel “Highlight Reel” Bredwell, Jude began dropping that head and pounding the ball forward. O’Toole scored both of Midway’s 2nd half TD’s on his way to 108 yards rushing.

In the end, the game came down to one play. Oneida had the ball down by 5 with fewer than 2 minutes to go and was less than 15 yards from the endzone. Midway forced them into a 4th and 5 situation. Oneida’s QB takes the snap and rolls left…looking for his 6’4″ receiver…however, from the Tackle position on the other side of the ball, 6’5″ 265 lbs, “Big Jon” Russell chased down the QB for a game winning sack!

As the game ended, it was announced that Greenback had just beaten Coalfield, meaning Midway is now the top dog in the district. Congratulations to the Green and White!
