Midway Splits Games

The Lady Waves faced a tough opponent in Greenback on Friday; however the Lady Waves hung with the Cherokees early but turnovers took their toll on the Lady Waves as the Cherokees pulled away to a 48-30 win.

The biggest obstacle facing the Lady Waves is height; they have none. They struggle against opponents such as Greenback who was a head taller at every position.

A bright spot for the Lady Waves was the play of freshman guard, #5 Kathryn Beard. Kathryn didn’t play like a freshman….she handled the ball well and wasn’t scared to take a jumper or take her 80lbs frame and drive to the rim.

The Lady Waves will look for a much needed win against TSD on Tuesday night.

The boys game was a nail biter to say the least as the winning points came with just 9 seconds left in the game as the Greenwaves held on to a 44-42 win.

The first half was close, too close. Greenback turned the ball over time and time again but the Greenwaves were not able to capitalize. However, the Greenwaves came out on fire to start the 3rd and quickly took a commanding lead.

With a big lead, the Midway Maniacs cranked up a little “Sweet Home South da River”. But Greenback wasn’t done as they made a 4th quarter run to tie the game with under a minute to go in the game. With the game close, the Midway Maniacs helped to spark the Greenwaves with the S-O-R chant. S-O-R echoed throughout the gym forcing the Cherokee fans to simply cover their ears.

The teams would swap turnovers a couple times before Seth Lyle put the ball on the floor and drove to the rim and laid it in to put the Greenwaves back up with just 9 seconds to go. Greenback had one last chance and actually had an open 15 foot jumper but it hit the back of the rim and Midway came away with the rebound and the win.

With the win, the Midway Maniacs started a chant that was one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard…….”just like football…. just like football….

The boys have now won three in a row and are 1-0 in the district.
