Lady Waves Sweep Wartburg, Stumble at Rockwood

Lady Waves fan Nath Hickey enjoys a day at the field. Nath is a big supporter of Midway softball.

Just before the spring break commenced, the Midway Lady Waves hosted another double header. This time the visitors were the Wartburg Lady Bulldogs. The results were much the same as in the Oakdale double header that took place the previous day. The girls in green got the bats pinging early and kept them sounding often.  Here’s a recipe for success: Start with a big dose of offensive production by virtually all the Lady Waves; throw in two solid games of pitching by Alex Richardson; season that with a fine defensive effort by the SOR girls. The result: two wins by a combined score of 35-1.

After a week of practice and rest, the Lady Waves were slotted to play a home-and-away series against Rockwood to open up the 2011 district schedule. The home game on Monday was rained out and rescheduled for April, but the Midway girls traveled to play in chilly conditions at Rockwood on Tuesday. It would be the first time these teams had met since the Lady Waves took the district crown in a wild tournament last May.

Midway center fielder Danielle Borum hits the ball earlier in the season. Borum had a big game on Tuesday at Rockwood.

Tuesday’s game started off with a bang for the SOR girls. After sophomore right fielder Halie Wiley walked to lead off the showdown, junior center fielder Danielle “Dee” Borum came to the plate. With an 0-1 count, Borum hit a bomb over the center field fence. The Lady Waves had struck first! 2-0, SOR.

Things were pretty quiet for the next two innings, and it looked like two runs might be enough. Then, the bottom of the third happened. It may have been the toughest inning in years for the Lady Waves. 14 batters, 3 hits, 3 errors, 9 runs. For the rest of the game, Rockwood was held scoreless by the Midway girls, indicating that this very well could have been a freak occurrence. The Midway faithful certainly believe it was.

The remainder of the game was a defensive battle. There was no additional scoring until the top of the seventh, when sophomore catcher Christina Stansbury hit a sacrifice RBI to bring in senior left fielder Paige Moree. Junior third baseman Hali Morris and junior first baseman Taylr Hall both got hits in the frame, but were left stranded in the end, as the Midway comeback attempt faded. The final was 9-3.

Top hitters for Midway included Danielle Borum (3-4, HR), Paige Moree (2-3) and Hali Morris (2-4).
