Pick Panel – Greeback Week

The Greenwaves (1-2) are coming off the bye-week and this Friday will head to the land of the Cherokees. Greenback (4-0) is undefeated with big wins over Oneida, Oliver Springs, Tellico Plains and Wartburg. Can the Waves pull off the upset of the season and put an end to Greenback’s perfect season?

Let’s ask the Panel.

Ralton “Mule” Emory:
The Waves would have to play a near perfect game and have some breaks to win this game. And the ball is shaped funny for a reason.

If the Green team can control the clock, score every opportunity, and make the Cherokees work with a long field, they could pull the upset.

I don’t see that happening, but they could.

As much as it pains me, give me Greenback by at least 2 touchdowns.

Greenback 100, Midway 78

Randy “Zipper” Rose:
Do you ever wonder why Greenback’s colors are Orange and Black? It’s Green–Back. oh well, I would love to see a big win against Greenback, but I’m going to have to go with the Cherokees this week.

Kyle Canup:
If the Waves could pull a big district upset over the undefeated Greenback team it would be huge for their momentum and their standing. Although they’re undefeated this year and have had some big wins early on in the season, they only beat the Wartburg Bulldogs by 10…Wartburg. The Waves played well against the Bulldogs in the preseason and hopefully they will play well against Greenback this upcoming Friday. I think Midway is going to travel to Greenback looking to make the upset and play a tough game, and hopefully there will be. I got the Waves in a tough game upsetting the undefeated Greenback team…I really hope me and Barry Narramore make good on this pick.

Barry “Boo” Narramore:
Greenback week!!!! Can’t wait to make a long trip through the cow pastures to visit the Cherokees! Greenback is off to a good start but the Green team built some steam with a big win over Pickett County. With 2 weeks to get healthy I think the Green machine may to ready to shock the district!!! This one’s gonna be tough but give me the Green in a thriller: Midway 21 Greenback 20

As much as it pains me, Greenback (Yuck!)

Michael “Corso” Rose:
After a big victory, a one week bye and a two week hiatus by the SORSN.com editor, who now goes by the nickname “Captain Campground”, the Green machine and SORSN.com hit the road this week to the not so friendly confines of longtime north Loudon county rival, Greenback. Captain Campground has made a promise to the Green nation to be field side for the remainder of the season to provide photos, commentary and the all important almost real time Facebook updates that we have all come to depend upon. Here’s to you and all you do for SORSN.com, Captain Campground.

The Cherokees, former state champions and one time member of the dark side of all things (think Bill Satterfield as Dr. Evil) look to run their record to 5-0 prior to trips to coachless Cloudland (a sordid tale there) and before taking their annual smackdown at the hands of Grace Christian (a rivalry that has turned really, really ugly lately). The Waves are looking to even their record in the regular season for the first time in a couple years and could use a quality win for the program. They say the past is the key to the future, so let’s look to the wisest of football wise men in East Tennessee history to provide a hint of things to come.

General Robert R Neyland had seven favorite maxims in which he believed were the key to successful football teams. Lets focus on a couple of the good Generals maxims and see how they apply in the “modern” era of football (i.e the era starting after Boo Narramore graduated).

Maxim 1. The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win. Simply put, turnovers and penalties will kill a football teams chances to win. The Waves have to minimize both in order to have an opportunity to compete in this game.
Maxim 2. Carry the fight to the opponent and keep it there for 60 minutes. In football, and particularly in iron man single A football, a player simply cannot take a series, or even a play off. The play that you relax on could very easily be the play that gets you or your team beat.

I believe the Waves will be up to Maxim #2. If you are a Midway player and you can’t motivate yourself to play 60 minutes against Greenback, then you probably need to consider another recreational opportunity (maybe campfire s’mores cooking or stray golf ball hunting, both favorite pastimes of Captain Campground). I think the Waves will have a bit more trouble with Maxim #1. Turnovers and penalties have hurt the Waves in early loses and are a common problem with a young team (oh where have you gone, Greenwave upper classman?). I think that is likely to continue this Friday night for the Waves.

My pick, unfortunately, is Greenback.
