Battle of Midway Ends with Waves heading to district championship

Midway is hosting the district tournament this year and both the Midway Lady Wave and Wave were in action Thursday night in the semi-finals. Top seeded Lady Waves defeated Harriman, 50-45, to advance to the district championship. In the boys game, it was the third ranked Midway Waves against #2 Rockwood. The Wave got the win, 44-38, to beat the Tigers and advance to the district championship game for the first time since 2003.

Girls Game

The Lady Wave had a solid opening quarter offensively putting up 13 points to start the game.  The freshman, Tatum Collier, led the scoring with 7 first quarter points. But offensively the girls in green couldn’t find a rhythm and defensively, the Lady Waves struggled to produce turnovers. Midway had a relatively quiet 2nd quarter offensively and the Lady Devils were lurking in the shadows, quietly scoring enough to keep the game close.  6 different players would get into the scoring column in the first half for Harriman and the Lady Wave clung to a 2-point lead heading into the break.

In the second half, Kyleigh Cawood started to get some shots to fall. The sophomore connected on a 3-pointer and layup, but the offense once again started to stall.  But on a night when your typical scorers are off, you need someone to step up and the Lady Wave had just that with Addie Armes. Armes had 8 points in the first half, and she continued to make critical buckets in the second half, adding 4 points in the final minutes. Harriman had their best offensive production in the 4th quarter, but it wasn’t enough.  The Lady Waves got the 50-45 win and will play Tuesday night against Oakdale for the district championship.

Armes led the scoring with 14 for the Lady Wave. Kyleigh Cawood had 12, Collier 10, Abbie Parks 6, and Cloa Copeland 4.

Boys Game

For the second time in 6 days, Midway would face off against Coach Kamikawa and the Rockwood Tigers.  The Wave & Tigers split games in the regular season but now there was a trip to the district championship on the line. From the tip, Midway made it clear they came to play. Despite the Tigers defense face guarding both Brennan Reed and Cooper Queener, all 5 starters scored buckets in the opening quarter to take a 14-8 early lead.  Both teams struggled offensively in the second quarter and combined for only 5 made baskets. Both teams seemed to be okay with not pushing the ball and instead, work through their half-court offense.

The second half started with a bang for the Wave.  Peyton Steele would knock down a pair of 3’s and Reed got enough space to also knock one down.  The Waves would build out a double-digit lead going into the fourth quarter.  But as we all know, the game is 4 quarters long.  Rockwood, specifically Ty Pryor, would make a run. Unable to find his shot in the first 3 quarters, Pryor knocked down 3 deep shots from behind the arc to quickly put Rockwood within reach.  Quick possessions and unnecessary shot attempts by the Wave gave the Tigers hope in the closing minute.  But the big man, Evan Lemons, had ice in his veins. The senior would hit 4 of 4 free throws to end the threat and send Midway to the championship game.

Steele led Midway with 12 points on 56% shooting.  Reed had 9 points and 4 assists. Dalton Cowell & Evan Lemons each had 8 points and 8 rebounds. Queener added 7 points and a pair of assists.
