You can’t spell retribution without Win…

Okay, maybe you can but nothing feels better than getting a couple blowout wins over Greenback to avenge a mid-season slip up.  On January 5th, the Midway players, coaches and fans left the land of the ‘kees with heads hanging low after falling victim to a couple upset losses. History would not repeat itself.  Midway made a statement with the Lady Wave winning 66-36 and the Wave winning 64-38.

Two words: The Kid. Kyleigh Cawood was unstoppable. The sophomore guard would scalp the Cherokees for 31 points, a career high. Not only did she lead the game in scoring, she did it efficiently.  Cawood shot an impressive 75% from the field. She also hauled in 12 rebounds, many of which leading to coast-to-coast breakaway layups.

The Lady Wave would do their damage in the latter half of the game. Up by twelve mid-way through the 3rd quarter, Midway would start to run away with the game. In what felt like a bling of an eye, the Lady Wave went from a 12-point lead to a 24-point lead. The Lady Cherokees could not keep the Lady Waves out of the paint, which led to easy drive-and-dish buckets.

It was a solid, dominating performance by the Lady Wave. In addition to Cawood’s 31 points, Juniors Abbie Parks and Addie Armes put up 11 points, 9 rebounds and 8 points, 3 assists respectively. Freshman Tatum Collier racked up 7 points and 6 rebounds.  Eight different Lady Waves would get into the scoring column.

The Midway boys have been playing good basketball since shaking off the effects of the winter storm. The Wave were looking for their 3rd straight win and they came out sharp in the first quarter. Cooper Queener would knock down back-to-back 3’s and Dalton Cowell attacked the Greenback defense, scoring 8 points with six of those coming from the free-throw line.  Junior guard Brennan Reed would have a big 2nd quarter, getting to the rim for 10 points before the half.

The Midway defense would take over in the second half, allowing Greenback just 7 points in each of the quarters. Center Evan “The Glove” Lemons proved he can defend anyone, anywhere on the court.  Reed and Cowell had 3 steals each to shut down any offensive threat from Greenback.

Dalton Cowell led with 20 points, Reed had 16 and Queener 12. The Wave shot a high percentage from the field.  Cowell was 70% hitting 7 of 10, Reed was 7-10 (54%) and Queener was 4 of 8 from behind the arc. Seven different Waves would get into the scoring column and collectively, the team shot ~ 50% from the field.
