Background on Watertown

The 1977-78 Midway Greenwave team went 8-2 in the regular season…quarterbacked by junior Ron Woody, led by top senior running back San Narramore….other seniors included Brice Woody. A tough loss to Sweetwater during the season cost a spot in the state playoffs. (At that time only the District Champ made it into the playoffs)

Midway was invited and accepted an invitation to play in the Industrial Bowl in Lafayette, TN. The opponent was Watertown, who no one in Midway had ever heard of, and we learned they were also 8-2 and ranked high in the state but missed the playoffs. They were also led by a highly regarded running back.

I think they invited us thinking we would provide a decent opponent for a win for Watertown to top off their season. When we arrived at the game by a cool chartered bus, we were led thru a very nice, plush locker room (which we found out would be Watertown’s) to our locker room. A cold, no heat, small, dark, dingy locker room was reserved for the team from SOR.

The South of the River trash proceeded to lay a butt-kicking on Watertown, shutting down their star running back with a great defensive effort and bringing back to SOR the championship trophy from the Industrial Bowl.

I expect this year’s team to kick some Watertown butt again. GO GREEN.
